SAYAKA violinist composer

父はクラシックの作曲家、母はピアノ教師という音楽一家に生まれ、6歳よりヴァイオリンを始める。
95年全日本学生音楽コンクール入選、96年桐朋学園大学に入学、在学中より演奏活動を始める。

20年にキューバへ留学。キューバの国宝級バンド、オルケスタ・アラゴンのメンバー、ラザロ・ ダゴベルト・ゴンザレスに認められ、ハバナのナポレオン美術館でソロ・ コンサートを開くなど、幅広い経験を積んだ後、約1年後に帰国。

翌02年、映画『ブエナビスタ・ソシアル・クラブ』の出演者、エリアデス・ オチョア(Gt)に招待を受け、“Sones de Oriente”のメンバーとして、国際ソン・フェスティバルに参加。メモリアル・アルバムにも2曲参加し、キューバ 国営放送、テレビで高く評価される。

03年NYにて、グラミー賞受賞アーティスト、オラシオ“エル・ネグロ” エルナンデス(Dr)とロビー・アミーン(Dr)のユニットに参加。同年のアルバ ム『Onto The Street』のレコーディングにも加わる。その後のブルーノート東京 での公演にも3日間飛び入りし、デイヴ・ヴァレンティン(Fl)と共演。

04年より、世界的に活躍するキーボード奏者、Yanni(ヤニー)の2004-2005ツアーにソリストとしてアジア人初の大抜擢を受け、NYラジオシティー・ホールをはじめ、世界 約50か所でのコンサートに参加。多くのメディアで「The Very New Violinist!」と絶賛され、海外マスコミの注目を集めた。同年、キューバにて、日本キューバ文化交流コンサートに出演し、キューバの歌姫オマーラ・ボルトゥオンドと共演。

04年、BSドキュメンタリー番組『みどりの島のはなし』に、主演の本上まなみを案内するキューバのナビゲーターとして出演。

06年夏には『Yanni Live! The Concert Event』CD/DVDが全世界発売。11月、キューバ滞在時に知り合ったミュージシャンと結成したバンド「CHAKALA」のCDをリリース。

同年、グラミー賞受賞ドラマー、オラシオ“エル・ネグロ” エルナンデス(Dr)率いるラテンジャズバンドItalubaの公開録音（オランダ、Bimhuis）にゲスト出演、Richie Flores(perc)らと共演。

08年、広告写真家の巨匠、操上和美が初監督を務めた映画『ゼラチンシルバーLOVE』('09年3月上映/主演:宮沢りえ、永瀬 正敏)にヴァイオリニスト役で出演。同映画のオリジナル・サウンドトラックに「So-la」「音につづけ」他、4曲を提供。

09年、東京JAZZ“真夏の夜のジャズ”に出演、ジャズ界の巨匠、故ハンクジョーンズ(p)と共演。コンサートの模様が放映される。

09年、伊藤八十八氏プロデュースのもと『Palma Habanera(パルマ・アバネーラ)』を7月22日にリリース、メジャーデビュー。株式会社オフィスエム・ツーとレーベル契約。

同年12月にはキューバにて、日本・キューバ外交樹立80周年記念特別コンサートに“SAYAKA y su Palma Habanera”として参加。 翌年11月17日に2nd. Album『A Cuba(キューバへ)』をリリース。TBS系テレビ全国ネット『がっちりマンデー!!』エンディングテーマ、TBS-TV『エンプラ』エンディング・テーマに採用される。

10年１月、キューバにてMaraca & The Monterey Latin Jazz All Starsコンサートに出演、国内外の有名アーティストと共演する。国営テレビ、ラジオに多数インタビューを受け、現在も音楽番組などで紹介され続けている。同コンサートのDVDが11年全世界発売。

11年10月6、7日韓国ウルサンのWorld Music FestivalにPalma Habaneraとして出演。同年10月15日、Yoshiro広石氏(vo)のコンサートにて、キューバの歌姫オマーラ・ポルトゥオンド（『ブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブ』出演）と再び共演。

12年7月にSAYAKA y su Palma Habanera3枚目のアルバム「Pa'l Mundo」発売

12月にはチュニジアにて、チュニジアの革命がテーマのドキュメンタリー映画「Sacré Kef」ビデオク

リップに出演、現地にて撮影。

12年札幌シティジャズ、軽井沢ジャズフェスにPalma Habaneraとして出演。またNHK BS1のテレビ 番組「エルムンド」にトークゲストとして出演。

13年、キューバのEgrem Studioにて豪華ゲストを迎え通算6枚目のアルバムを録音。同年11月に は、女流指揮者の西本智実率いるIlluminart Philharmonic Orchestraのメンバーとしてヴァチカン市国より招待を受け、San Pietro寺院などで演奏。

14年2月、インドネシアのJava Jazz Festivalに出演。 3月、東京にてフラメンコダンサーの巨匠Antonio Canalesらと共演。

4月にはチュニジアのCarthage Acropoliumにて行われた111人のヴァイオリニストコンサートにゲスト 出演。子供たちへのワークショップも行う。

8月、フランスのMarciac Jazz Festivalに出演。キューバ人フルート奏者Maraca、世界的なコンガ奏者 Giovanni Hidalgoなどと共演する。

15年12月に通算６枚目となるキューバ録音アルバム”Japonesa en la Habana”を発売、キューバを代表するミュージシャンと共演。

出産、コロナ禍を経て（文化庁支援事業など音楽事業は継続していた）、2023年よりジャズの名門Blue Note Tokyoの系列店Blue Note Placeに自己バンドで定期的に出演。８月には同会場にて東京アーツカウンシルの助成を受け家族向けのコンサートを開催する。

同年6月、サウジアラビア政府より招待を受けアラビアンポップのスターMohamed Mounir氏のコンサートにゲスト出演。

9月に京都の東寺にて行われた音舞台（東寺1200周年記念）にソリストとして出演。TBS系で全国放映。

ヴァイオリンを石井志都子(ロン・ティボー国際コンクール優勝)、ラザロ・ダゴベルト・ゴンザレス(グラミー賞ノミネート) 各氏に師事。パーカッションをオスカル・バルデス(グラミー賞キューバン・ジャズ・バンド”イラケレ”のメンバー)に師事。

Sayaka Katsuki has developed a singular musical talent in a musical household, with a classical music composer father and a professional singing mother. Sayaka started studying violin at the age of 6. In 1995, she competed in the All Japan Student Music Contest. In 1996, she entered the Toho Gakuen School of Music, but left after half a year to expand her horizons beyond the classical curriculum at the center of her program. She found her passion in the music of Cuba. In 1998, she lived for the first time in Cuba, taking lessons and participating in jam sessions as well as holding solo concerts in Havana and the Napoleon Museum. After about one year, Sayaka returned to Japan.

In 2002, at the invitation of the guitarist Eliades Ochoa, who featured in the movie “Buena Vista Social Club”, Sayaka participated at the International Song Festival as a member of “Sones de Oriente”. She featured in two songs on the group’s Memorial Album and commanded wide popularity after being broadcast on the national television network. She also performed with the popular salsa bands Los Van Van and Manolito Simonet as well as well as the nationally sponsored band Orequesta Aragon.

In 2003, Sayaka performed in New York with the Grammy winning percussionists Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez and Robby Ameen. She also was a supporting artist in the same year the recording of “Onto The Street”. After that, she performed over three days at the Blue Note Tokyo with flutist Dave Valentin.

From 2004, Sayaka peformed as a soloist and the first Asian participant in the world tour of Yanni. Starting with Radio City Music Hall, concerts were held in approximately 50 countries and was heralded in many forms of media as “The Very New Violinist”.

In the same year, she participated in a Japan-Cuba cultural exchange concert, performing with the Cuban diva Omara Portuondo.

Also in 2004, Sayaka featured in the popular Japanese cable television documentary “Midori no Shima no Hanashi” (Tales of the Green Island), which was hosted by Manami Honjo.

In 2008, Sayaka had a cameo role as a violinist in the first movie directed by fashion photographer Kazumi Kurigami, Gelatin Silver Love, also starring Rie Miyazawa, Masatoshi Nagase and Koji Yakusho and contributed 4 original compositions to the movie’s soundtrack, including “So-la” and “Oto ni Tsuzuke” (Continuous Noise).

In 2009, Sayaka performed with pianist Hank Jones in the Tokyo Mid-Summer’s Evening Jazz Festival, which was also broadcast broadly. Also in that same year, Sayaka joined with session artists Junichiro Oguchi (piano), Ryotaro Shibata (guitar), Tetsuo Koizumi (bass) and Ken Ogimi (percussion) to release on July 22nd of the same year a debut album titled “Palma Habanera”. In December of the same year, the group performed at a special memorial concert celebrating 80 years of Japanese-Cuban relations as “SAYAKA y su Palma Habanera”. The same group also performed together for the first time in Cuba. On November 17th of the following year, the group released its second album, “A Cuba”, music from which as used for the Tokyo Broadcasting System’s nationwide program “Gachiri Monday” (Solid Monday!) and as the ending theme of TBS-TV’s “Enpura” (Entertainment Plus). In Autumn, 2012, Palma Habanera released its third CD titled pa’lMundo.

In January, 2010, Sayaka performed in Cuba again with Maraca & The Monterey Latin Jazz All Stars, artists well known both within Cuba and internationally. Sayaka was interviewed multiple times on national television and radio, and even now the performances are aired regularly on music programs. The same concert was distributed

internationally on DVDs in 2011.

Palma Habanera performed at the World Music Festival held on October 6th & 7th, 2011 in Ulsan, Korea.

In December of the same year, Sayaka was filmed in Tunisia for a video clip in a documentary about Tunisia’s revolution called “Sacré Kef”.

Sayaka led Palma Habanera in 2012 at Sapporo City Jazz and the Karuizawa Jazz Festival and was a featured guest on NHK’s El Mundo television program.

In 2013, Sayaka was invited to the Egrem Studio in Cuba as a special guest musician to participate on the studio’s 6th album. In November of the same year, Sayaka participated with the classical Illuminart Philharmonic Orchestra, led by avante guard female conductor Tomomi Nishimoto, at the invitation of the Vatican in a special concert at the Church of San Pietro and other venues in Rome.

In February, 2014, Sayaka participated in the Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia. March saw a performance in Tokyo with Flamenco dancing legend Antonio Canales. Sayaka flew to Tunisia in April to perform in a concert of 111 violinists at the Carthage Acropolium and participated in a workshop for children there. In August, she performed at the Marciac Jazz Festival in France along with the Cuban flutist Maraca, international conga master Giovanni Hidalgo and others. In September, she returned to the Illuminart Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist, leading the classical orchestra in presenting Argentinian Tango compositions.
